Sudan president announces immediate Darfur ceasefire
KHARTOUM (AFP) - Sudanese President Omar al-Beshir on Wednesday announced an immediate ceasefire in Darfur and called for a campaign to disarm militias which have been ravaging the western region.

Top US envoy to Africa visits Sudan
WASHINGTON (AFP) - US envoy Jendayi Frazer visited Khartoum on Monday to discuss with Sudanese leaders the peace accord with southern Sudan and the conflict in the western Darfur region, the State Department said.

Five kidnapped Chinese oil workers killed in Sudan
KHARTOUM (AFP) - Sudan said Darfur rebels on Monday shot and killed five kidnapped Chinese oil workers and that two others escaped with gunshot wounds in the first deadly foreign hostage ordeal since the war began.

US circles hijacked ship with Sudan-bound weapons
MOGADISHU, Somalia - U.S. warships and helicopters on Monday surrounded a hijacked cargo ship loaded with Sudan-bound tanks and other arms to keep the weapons from falling "into the wrong hands," an American Navy spokesman said.

Egypt desert tourists freed after three-day ordeal
CAIRO (AFP) - A group of 19 foreign tourists and Egyptians kidnapped at gunpoint by bandits while on a desert safari in a remote corner of southwestern Egypt have been freed, Egypt's foreign minister said on Monday.
